The Albuquerque Cultural Conference began as a two-day slate of panels and workshops focused on culture as practiced today, and on developing a vision of a more human, collective, supportive culture for the future.
Beginning with the idea that culture is more than entertainment, we look at the social, economic, and cultural crisis of the present, as well as the history of cultural struggles, current forms of grassroots organizing, and the uses of cultural memory and resilience.
We need to start with the people themselves, not as their teachersand shapers but as their listeners and interpreters. Working with community, academic, and labor-related organizers, we ask how we, as writers and artists, confront the world, and how we can produce and proclaim cultural work relevant to all of our needs.
Performance is essential to what we do. Every meeting we have includes performance events, such as poetry readings, art exhibits, film showings or workshops.
By promoting spoken arts, drama, music, photography and film, radio and television, digital communications, and cultural discussions in the service of community and social change, we hope to become a cultural force in the region, concentrating on sponsoring art programs with an emphasis on community activism and social change.
The Albuquerque Almanac is a yearly planner with real stories by real people, an annual anthology depicting the heart and soul of the Duke City. Editor and Publisher Amanda Gardner says, “This is about more than just the weather.”
Filled with short stories, folklore, poetry and beyond, you’ll find yourself wanting to read more and more when all you intended to do was write down that dental appointment.
The Almanac seeks writers from all walks of life to share their personal experiences of Albuquerque. “Send us your stories of Albuquerque, your favorite restaurants, hikes, quirkiest museum,” says Amanda. “Heck! Tell us about your favorite parking lot!”
“We especially want more calendar listings, more event listings, more place listings.” You can download the full Writer’s Guidelines for the Almanac here. For ordering information, click here.
