Stacey’s StoryRobert L. PereaThis first novel by Mexican-American/Oglala Sioux writer Robert L. Perea won an award at the Returning the Gift Conference of Native American writers in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1992. It tells the story of a mother, her boyfriend, and a baby girl—a story which transcends poverty and neglect to suggest the growing, intuitive relationship between the boyfriend, Bob, and the little girl, Stacey, until the child is finally taken away and sent east to live with relatives. It is also the story of an old Indian culture: “The people had lost most of their culture. . . . But the spirit was still with them. Like the hot desert breeze. And that’s what mattered most.” 6 x 9 inches • 70 pages • ISBN 0-931122-80-5 • $8.95 |
