News & ReviewsJenifer Rae Vernon’s Rock Candy, one of the new releases in the West End Press New Series, is getting great early coverage. Listen to “Blackberry Pie” on Writer’s Almanac in the “On the Air” section, or read reviews in the Juneau Empire here and in the Albuquerque Weekly Alibi here. Vernon reads throughout the Pacific Northwest this fall. (See “Events” below.) Sy Hoahwah’s Velroy and the Madischie Mafia, just released in the New Series from West End Press, was in the top 20 bestsellers on the Poetry Foundation website for the week of October 18. The Albuquerque Cultural Conference held a planning meeting in September. Attendees talked about the role of activism in the arts, how performance affects the arts, and how the cultural conference can move ahead and form alliances with arts communities. Jeanetta Calhoun Mish, author of Work is Love Made Visible, a recent release in the West End Press New Series, read at LaborFest in San Francisco this summer. We can now call Jeanetta “Dr.” as she successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation this fall at the University of Oklahoma. Congratulations, Jeanetta! The 2010 Albuquerque Almanac is now available. In addition to heartfelt stories about the ’Burque from more than fifty contributors, the Almanac also includes handy listings for local eateries, museums, and events.
